Types of drilling fluids:

water-based muds WBM (water and chemicals equipped), oil-based muds OBM (oil and chemicals equipped), synthetic-based muds (SBM) Synthetic-based muds (SBM) were developed from the 1980s as an alternative system to oil-based muds (OBM), and are classified into ester-based, ether-based, poly-alpha-olefin (PA) O)-based and chained alkyl benzene (LAB)-based types. Ester-based mud (EBM) is used the most.SBM is easily degraded and dispersed in seawater, causes little environmental pollution, and can be discharged in situ at sea, and the seabed bio-organisms are easier to restore to their original level. Compared with OBM, it has lower thermal stability, higher viscosity at low temperatures, faster viscosity drop with temperature rise, and is not easy to dewater shale.SBM system has a higher cost, but the total drilling cost is lower than WBM and OBM, and it can be used to drill large inclined wells, extended wells, and horizontal wells.


Composition of drilling fluid:

Drilling fluid consists of dispersing medium, dispersed phase, and additives.

Drilling fluid mainly consists of liquid phase, solid phase, and chemical treatment agent. The liquid phase can be water (freshwater, brine), oil (crude oil, diesel fuel), or emulsion (mixed oil emulsion and reverse phase emulsion). Solid phases include useful solid phases (bentonite, weighted materials) and unwanted solid phases (rocks). Chemical treatment agents include inorganic, organic, and polymer compounds. That is, drilling fluid pH control agent, drilling fluid calcium remover, drilling fluid foaming agent, drilling fluid flocculant, anti-collapsing agent, drilling fluid corrosion inhibitor, drilling fluid viscosity reducer, drilling fluid viscosity enhancer, drilling fluid loss reducer, drilling fluid lubrication, decoupling agent, temperature stabilizer, density adjusting material, and plugging material. The last two categories in the classification of drilling fluid treatment agents by application are called materials because they are used in large quantities, generally more than 5%.

Role of drilling fluid:

  1. Flushing the bottom of the well: the drilling fluid can form a high-speed liquid flow at the water hole of the drill bit and spray to the bottom of the well. This high-speed jet of drilling fluid can wash up the rock chips held at the bottom of the well due to the difference between the pressure of the drilling fluid and the pressure of the stratum, and play the role of flushing the bottom of the well.
  2. Carrying rock chips: When the upward return speed of drilling fluid in the annulus is greater than the settling speed of rock chips, the drilling fluid can bring the rock chips out of the well, i.e., under a certain upward return speed, the drilling fluid has the function of carrying rock chips (referred to as rock carrying).
  3. Balance formation pressure: The column pressure of drilling fluid must be balanced with the formation pressure in order to achieve the purpose of preventing blowout or massive leakage of drilling fluid into the formation. The column pressure of the drilling fluid can be controlled by adjusting the density of the drilling fluid so that it can be balanced with the formation pressure.
  4. Cooling and lubricating the drill bit: The drilling fluid can cool the hot strip generated by the friction between the drilling tools (drill bit and drill pipe) and the formation of the ground. At the same time, the drilling fluid can effectively reduce the friction between the drilling tools and the formation, and play the role of lubrication.
  5. Stabilizing the well wall: Appropriate processors can be added to the drilling fluid, so that the drilling fluid has the ability to inhibit the expansion and/or dispersion of shale, and at the same time produces a thin and tough filter cake, which serves to stabilize the wall of the well.
  6. Suspension of rock chips and density adjustment materials: when the circulation is stopped, the drilling fluid is in a static state, in which the bentonite particles can be linked to each other to form a structure to suspend the rock chips. If the drilling fluid has density-adjusting materials (such as barite), the drilling fluid can also suspend when circulation stops. The ability of the drilling fluid to suspend the rock cuttings and density-adjusting material makes it easy to restart the drilling fluid after it stops circulating.
  7. Obtaining formation information: Through the rock cuttings carried out by drilling fluid, it is possible to obtain a lot of information about the formation, such as oil and gas shows, physical properties of the formation, and so on.
  8. Transmit power: drilling fluid can transmit the power of the drilling fluid pump to the bottom of the well through the drill column by high-speed jetting from the water hole of the drill bit to improve the rock-breaking ability of the drill bit and speed up the drilling speed.
